What the Moderate Republican Stands For

Republicans came to power as the party of big ideas, and without returning to that model they could be looking at a long winter. Additionally, those big ideas need to focus on Middle America. Three issues that could work are conservation, reform and localism.

Conservation- a return to the Teddy Roosevelt model of conservation. One doesn’t necessarily have to buy into global warming to appreciate the need to protect the natural resources we have.

Reform- the federal government is bigger than ever, and won’t be getting any smaller over the next four years. Republicans need to fashion themselves as national reformers. Much of Middle America wants the government as safety net, but bloated bureaucracies breed corruption that needs to be dealt with.

Localism- this is the lynchpin that brings it all together. If we bought our food locally, shopped locally, governed locally, many of the issue we now have to deal with would go away, or at the least become manageable.

Nobel Prize for Obama. Really?

I know I am a little late on this one, but I just got back from Washington and our annual middle school trip and have to give my two cents worth here. Along with just about everyone else I was shocked when I heard this news. What was Nobel thinking? Even if you agree with the general direction of Obama's foreign policy you have to be scratching your head on this one.

What is probably most depressing about the whole episode is not that someone who hasn't really done anything yet to deserve the prize won, but that the prize itself has been tarnished. Are we now to look at the Nobel Prize as some kind of signing bonus in return for services yet to be rendered?

As a side note, the whole ordeal ruined our trip to the White House as they had to shut down one of the rooms causing a back log and a nearly 90 minute wait to get in!

Oh well.

What was the buzz in DC, did a lot of people in the beltway seem to think Obama winning the prize was ridiculous?

Yes Beth...all but the most die hard supporters thought it was - at the least premature.
